Judi Sammons and Nala

Leonberger is a breed of dog. They’re big and German and they’re famous for being water rescue canines. But here in Grand Junction? At least one …is famous for just being there. Nala is a therapy dog. At 125 pounds and quite hairy, paws the size of saucers and a snout that reaches out …really far, one might think …‘how did a bear get in here?’  Here, being the Veterans Hospital. But one turn into a room …and the bear turns into a Teddy Bear …and what was a quiet hospital area …lights up. The atmosphere goes from gloomy to “yeah!”… All because of one dog’s ability to …just bring a smile to peoples faces. Judi Sammons just happens to be the human at the end of the leash…and Nala’s best friend. You see …when Nala walks into the room…Judi knows that nobody even knows she’s there anymore…and that’s the way she likes it. Nala is the star ...Judi is the roadie to this rock show. Nala bringing her act of love on the tour every Wednesday to the Veteran’s Hospital. This behemoth’s simple strolling bringing bright smiles to folks who desperately need a diversion. And, a walking area rug…is a sight to behold. Nobody is sure why a dog can just make us feel better …they just do. Maybe it’s just because they acceptance for who were are.   Judi knows it works…the staff at the hospital knows it works…but most of all, the patients feel it, and look forward to Wednesdays with Nala.   A simple love story of man, beast and a little something we’re all looking for …unconditional love.
