Tonette: Janae Steward

Janae Steward loves to perform. So much so she even moved to New York City to pursue her dream of getting on Broadway.  It was a good journey …but, home here on the Western Slope was calling and she came back after about a year. Why not? Her sister, her family, her friends…they’re all here! So she decided…along with some of her friends from Mesa State College, to start a little 40’s style singing group called The Tonettes. And of course it has taken off for the energetic Janae and her four classy girlfriends. Well, they can sing! And, they also have pizzazz! So Valentines, Birthdays, special occasions, dropping by a business. They do it…and they do it in style. I caught up with the ladies at a Mexican Restaurant here in town. The occasion? A 63rd wedding anniversary. They were hired to sing a couple songs for happy duo.

Practice was in one of the girls SUV and I piled in the back to get some sound of the sweet harmonies. Singing  ‘Under the Apple Tree” and “Cheek to Cheek” …the sound sweet, transforming the Big SUV into a Big Band Era Club. A few tweaks here and there and it was into the restaurant for the big surprise. Five regal ladies in black dresses, red belts, sporting hats and 40’s hair and bright red lips…piling out of the big car…and of course me in blue jeans.  The surprise …was a surprise…the couple smiling as these beautiful ladies from the past made their way to the present and their table… bigger than life and a living reminder of days gone by.

How did it go and how did it sound? Listen to The Tonettes’ Allgood News right now to see and hear!
